Jan Kanty Rostworowski 1876-1963

He was born in Górka Narodowa near Kraków on 8 November 1876. He studied at the Freiburg and Kraków universities. Having joined the Jesuit order in 1895, he studied philosophy in Nowy Sącz (1898–1900) and theology in Kraków (1900–1904). He was ordained in 1905. He taught dogmatic theology in Krakow (1904–1912) while editing the Sodalis Marianus monthly (1908–1911) and contributing to Przegląd Powszechny [“Universal Review”]; he was rector in Stara Wieś (1912–1913) and Chyrów (1913–1915). During World War I he was deported by the Russians and spent three years in Siberia where he wrote the popular Obrazki z życia Zbawiciela [“Our Saviour’s life in pictures”] (1916). After returning to the country, he became a superior in Kraków (1918–1919), professor of theology in Stara Wieś (1919–1920), editor of the Sodalis Marianus (1920–1924), Wiara i Życie [“Faith and Life”] (1921–1924), Posłaniec Serca Jezusowego [“Messenger of the Heart of Christ”] (1921–1922), Głosy Katolickie [“Catholic Voices”] (1921–1923), Moderator (1929–1930) and Przegląd Powszechny [“Universal Review”] (1933–1936) papers and head of the Jesuit Publishing House in Krakow (1926–1936); after part of the Jesuit publishing house had moved to Warsaw, he became the superior of the Writers’ House in Warsaw. He was the author of Charakter i znaczenie biskupstwa w pierwszych dwóch wiekach dziejów Kościoła [“Nature and significance of the bishopric in the first two centuries of Church history”] (1926). From 7 October to 15 October 1939 he was imprisoned by the Germans in the Pawiak prison; he spent World War II performing pastoral and retreat work in Warsaw, Otwock, Szymanów and Kielce. After the war, he served as superior in Poznań (1945–1949) and was a contributor to Przegląd Powszechny [“Universal Review”] and Przewodnik Katolicki [“Catholic Guide”]. He died on 13 January 1963 in Warsaw.
